Don’t let a lack of space stop you from growing your own veggies. Yes, it will present some challenges but the reward of own vegetable garden is well worth it.
Keep in mind that all fruiting veggies (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, etc.) need eight plus hours of direct sunlight to produce. Leafy crops such as lettuce, spinach and kale will grow and produce in less than eight hours of direct sun.
Here are some tips to maximize your gardening potential in a small space.
- Choose the correct plants: Opt for dwarf, bush, patio or compact vegetable varieties. Plant tags and seed packets will indicate if they are meant for small spaces. These plants have been bred for small space growing. Every year, new plants are being introduced into the market for growing in smaller areas.
- Choose the right container: While your space might be small, you should use the largest container possible. Most veggies should be planted in containers that are at least 14” in diameter. All containers must have a drainage hole.
- Use potting soil: Resist the urge to dig up soil from your yard. Instead, use a purchased all-purpose potting soil from your local garden center.
- Utilize Vertical Space: Use trellises, hanging baskets, or wall-mounted planters to grow climbing/trailing plants like peas, cucumbers or beans.
- Companion Planting: Grow plants that thrive together in the same container, such as basil and tomatoes, to save space and improve yield.
- Square Foot Gardening: Divide your garden into small, manageable squares and plant a different crop in each to maximize diversity and efficiency.
- Fertilize: A limited amount of soil in a container also means a limited amount of nutrients available for the plant. Fertilize frequently with an organic fertilizer for more abundant yields.
- Extend your harvest season: Early Spring cool weather loving veggies such as peas, lettuce, spinach and radish can be planted again in late summer when the temperature starts cooling down.
By thinking creatively and using your space efficiently, even the smallest garden will flourish and be highly productive.
